The world is coming apart.
Something else is taking shape.

“Visually gorgeous
and highly recommended”

The Washington Post

The Compulsion

It starts with
a butter knife.

A greasy knife. A bottle cap. The turbine of an experimental jet engine.

When ordinary people across the world become irresistibly compelled to steal objects and assemble them into vast, inexplicable machines, humanity races to understand who—or what—is directing them before the alien structures finally switch on.

Two people sit above a beach on a vast construction assembled from salvaged objects, while more people carry materials along the shore.

The people

Four stories.
One inexplicable force.

Vida & Lee

An outreach worker helps people caught in the Compulsion—and finds herself drawn to a man she has never met.

Roy & Marcus

Roy descends beneath the Atlantic to retrieve an object from a wartime wreck, while his partner waits above.

Simone & the Congressman

A comedian’s set is interrupted by a congressman compelled to take her microphone.

Serge & Alina

A woman steals a policeman’s gun and takes him along for the journey.

The Compulsion can offer an overwhelming sense of purpose. It can also demand more than anyone wants to give.

The machines

What happens
when the machines
switch on?

Humanity is supplying the parts.
The purpose remains a mystery.

For film
and television

A global science-fiction mystery built around intimate, interlocking stories.

  • An immediately legible premise

Ordinary people dismantle the world around them to build machines nobody understands. Each act of construction makes everyday life harder to sustain.

  • An ensemble with dramatic range

Grief, devotion, dark comedy and political conflict connect four narratives spanning America, Britain and France.

  • A visual world already imagined

Schuiten’s monumental constructions combine familiar landmarks, scavenged machinery and transformed landscapes, giving the story a distinctive visual identity.

  • Free will under pressure

The Compelled’s actions turn freedom of choice into a practical crisis for families, police and governments.
